Generation 1

JOHN MICHAEL WAHL

A note about Germanic give names: It was a common practice in these countries to baptize children with a first and middle name. The first was a spiritual name, usually of a favorite saint. There are a lot of male German names beginning with Johann (John) and was perhaps the most favored by parents for their sons. The second, or middle, name was a secular "rufnamen" used in business and everyday conversation. In 1784 a Michael Wall was one of signers from Northampton County requesting that Peter Caler be nominated as a candidate for sheriff of Northampton County. It is very unlikely this person was our ancestor. Michael Wahl most likely arrived in Northampton County, Pennsylvania after the American Revolutionary War period. During the war immigration, especially from Germany, stopped completely. He shows up on the First Census of The United States taken in 1790. The name "Wall" (no given name) appears on the enumeration for Northampton County on that census below Michael Ohl, whom we know from later documents to be Michael's neighbor in Penn Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. A few years after Michael died (1801) his two sons, Philip and Christian, left Northampton County. Philip settled in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, and Christian lived for a short period in what was then Union County in or near Selingsgroove. In 1824 Christian removed his family to Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio.

WALL, Philip, b. 16 Oct. 1775 in German; d. 25 Oct. 1852, in Mifflin Township, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. Married (2) Rosenna Mosteller probably in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. The 1800 census of Northampton Co., Pennsylvania indicates Philip was married before moving to Columbia County; I have found no record of his marriage.^2,4

Will of Johann Michael Wahl (translation extract), "I John Michael Wahl, a resident of Penn Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, am in a weak a feeble condition of the body, and yet...a sound judgement and clear thinking...I herewith make...this, my last Will and Testament.
"First...my beloved wife Catherine Barbara, thoughout her natural life, shall have her rightfull possession and sustenance from my present farm, the one I possess or the farm house, as long as she carries my name and continues in her widowhood.
"And if anyone of my surviving children should want to take possession of the...farm, then shall that one be obligated to build...my wife a dwelling that is comfortable and large enough and...furnish her thoughout her...life with her sustenance. This must not happen without her consent.
"But [if]...she is willing to remarry...then...sum of £15, fifteen pounds of Pennsylvania Currency to be paid to her from my estate, and she shall be deprived of her residence.
"Second, [my] personal goods shall...be sold at public sale...[and] she shall get one half the money received...the other half I give...to my youngest son Christian.
"After the decease of my wife, I decree...that my...farm shall be sold at public sale, and from this growing amount of cash I decree...to my son Philip £5, five pounds of Pennsylvania Currency and no more, because he deceived me instead of being a support to me in my old age, he grieved and caused me to suffer by means of unkind and cruel treatments. The balance thereof, shall be divided in equal shares among my natural children.
"Third, and the last, I...appoint...my neighbor and trustworthy friend, Christopher Harttung, to be my only executor of this my last Will and Testament..."

CHRISTIAN WALL

Christian Wahl was born in Germany on 27 November 1779 and came as a child ten or eleven years old with his father, (possibly) his mother and older brother Philip, to Penn Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. His actual place of birth is unknown as is the name of his mother, although his brother Philip's 1852 certificate of death in Columbia County, Pennsylvania suggests that her given name was Susannah. This is far from certain. The information would have come from Philip's (apparent) second wife, Rosenna Mosteller Wall, and we have no way to judge the accuracy of her information. The family arrived from Germany about 1790, the approximate year the family settled in Northampton County. Immigration from Germany was halted during the American Revolution until after the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783. Christian grew of age in Northampton County and in 1804 married Anna Catherine Bachmann, daughter of Nicholas Bachmann and Catherine Kindt. The Bachmann immigrant ancestor arrived in Pennsylvania and settled in Northampton County years before the Revolution. Christian and his wife and family were German Reform (Lutheran) church members. Baptism records of the German Reformed Church of Lowhill Township and Ben Salem Union Church of Penn Township lists the baptisms of children John, Maria Magdalena, Charles, Rebecca, and Isaac between 1804 and 1815. Isaac's baptisim is the last record of Christian and his family in Northampton County. Probably about 1818 Christian moved his family to what was then Union County (now Snyder) near Selinsgroove, Pennsylvania, where he apparentlly engaged in some sort of commerical enterprise. In 1824 the family moved again, this time to Chippewa Township, Wayne County where Christian purchased from Stephen Ford of Jefferson County, Ohio, through the U.S. Land Office in Wooster, the west half of the north west quarter of Section 15 for $250. In 1840 he sold this farm to James A. Metlin for $2300. Sometime in 1830's Christian purchased a farm in the eastern half of Section 39 in Sharon Township, Medina County. His land lay between that of his son Charles to the south and son Isaac and son-in-law Joshua Hartman to the north. In 1837 Catherine Bachmann Wall died in Chippewa Township at the age of 52 and was buried in the cemetery of the old log church on the southern edge of Wadsworth Township founded by the Waltz family several years before the Wall family arrived in Ohio. Today the cemetery belongs to the Emanuel United Church of Christ of Doylestown. Later the same year Christian married Catherine's sister Magdalena, widow of Jacob Feller of Pennsylvania. Shortly before selling his land to Metlin, Christian purchased a lot in Wadsworth Township. He and Magdalena removed from Wayne County about that time. An 1857 map of Wadsworth property owners indicate that their home was located in the south eastern corner of the township. Christian died in Wadsworth on October 24th, 1853 still owning the farm in Sharon, which he farmed up until the time of his death. Wife Magdalena lived until May 1865. Christian, both of his wives and other family members are buried in the Emanuel United Church of Christ Cemetery and as of 2020 their gravestones, except for that of Catherine, are still visible, though worn by age and weather, on Eastern Road south of Wadsworth.

Sophia Frederick [daughter of Thomas Frederick of Chippewa Twp.] and Charles Wall married by G. Henry Weygandt, M.G. in Baughman Township, Wayne County.⁴¹ Charles was the second son born in 1808 to Christian and Catherine.

Paraphrased - Magdalena Wall to John Wall, Charles Wall, Isaac Wall, Peter Wall, Daniel Wall, Catherine Everhard, Margaret Brouse, Sarah Keller, Catherine Bower*, Eli Hartman, Barbara Baughman, the heirs of Christian Wall deceased, in consideration of $500 paid by these heirs to her makes a Quit Claim deed to Lot 39 in Sharon Township bounded as follows: from the NE corner of the lot south along the lot line 49 chains 44 links, then west along the south line of the lot 22 chains 73 links, then north along the lot's marked line 49 chains 39 links, then east 20 chains 30 links to the beginning containing a little more than 101 acres.⁴¹ Catherine (Wall) Everhard was the wife of Jonathan Everhard. Margaret Brouse is obviously daughter Rebecca, wife of Curtis Brouse (in her christening, marriage and census records she is listed only as Rebecca but is referred to as Margaret in Brown's Wadsworth Memorial and estate records for Christian); Sarah (Wall) Keller was the wife of Abraham Keller. I have not been able to identify Catherine Bower. Eli Hartman was the son of Judith Wall (deceased) and Joshua Hartman. Barbara Baughman was the daughter of Abigail Wall (deceased) and Joel Baughman. [*Catherine Bower, heir of Christian Wall, exact relationship is unknown].⁴¹

The Rev. Edward Brown returns to his old home, Wadsworth, Ohio from Minnesota for the celebration of the anniversary of its founding. His book published in Wadsworth that year included biographical sketches of many of the pioneer families, including that of "Christopher" Wall (a name mistake by the author). These sketches were hand written by family members and given to the anniversary committee and Rev. Brown to be included in the book.

JOHN WALL

John Wall was a prosperous farmer and land owner in Wadsworth Township, Medina County, Ohio. He was born and baptized in Northampton County, Pennsylvania in 1804, the first of eleven children born to Christian and Catherine Bachmann Wall. John left the home of his parents in Chippewa Township and settled in Wadsworth Township, Medina County shortly after the family's arrival in Ohio. Probably about 1828-29, John married cousin Maria Magdalena Baughman, daughter of Paul and Barbara Baughman, who may have come to Ohio before the Wall family. Both his sons were born in Wadsworth, Paul in 1830 and Daniel B. in 1835. Property owner maps of Wadsworth show that John owned sizeable properties, on the western perimeter of the village of Wadsworth and directly south of Wadsworth on the Medina and Wayne County line. The 1870 census gives John's real eastate value as $81,200 and personal property value of almost $5,000. In today's dollars (2020) that is worth almost $1 million, $800 thousand dollars. John and Mary had only two sons, unusual for the time. Both were prosperous farmers and business men in Wadsworth. Sometime before 1900 son Paul moved with his wife Isabella to Akron. The 1900 census of Akron lists Paul's occupation as "Capitalist". John Wall died in Wadsworth on May 26th, 1892 and is buried with his wife in Woodlawn Cemetery in Wadsworth.

Charles Wall was the third child of Christian and Catherine Bachmann Wall. He was born on September 14th, 1808 and christened Carl Wahl in Northampton County, Pennsylvania . He married Sophia Frederick, daughter of early Wayne County pioneers Thomas Frederick and Elizabeth Shank. Charles and Sophia were wed on December 17th, 1829, in Wayne County, Baughman Township (borders Chippewa on the west), by the Rev. G. Henry Weygandt. In 1831 Charles purchased his farm in the east half of Section 42 in Sharon Township, Medina County, just south of his father Christian's land.
According to THE HISTORY OF MEDINA COUNTY AND OHIO, "Mr. and Mrs. Wall were among the township's earliest settlers. They settled in the southeastern part in 1831, and in 1835, located on the farm they now occupy. Mr. Wall figured quite prominently in the early history of Sharon, and it was he that located and cut the road through the woods from the Montville line to Sharon Center. An item of interest in Mr. Wall's history is that he owned the first wagon in his neighborhood, and for this he gave seven good three-year-old steers and $35 cash. At that early day this wagon was considered a great luxury, and was only used on Sundays, etc.  Mr. and Mrs Wall are members of the Lutheran Church."
Charles and Sophia lived the rest of their lives in Sharon Township having ten children: Jonas, John, Christian F., Saloma, Thomas, Reason, William, Charles, Margaret, and Franklin. Children William, Charles, and Margaret died young and are buried with their parents in Sharon Center. Sophia died August 23rd, 1886 and Charles married for a second time, Harriet Luke (1828-1897), probably in Sharon Center. She was the widow of Peter Luke of Wadsworth (1820-1878). Charles died on January 10th, 1893 in Sharon Center and is buried next to Sophia and their small children in the Sharon Center Cemetery on Ridge Road (Highway 94) south of the town center. Their graves are on the south side of the north entrance to the cemetery. A large "Wall" obelisk, purchased by his grandson and my grandfather Reason Deforest Wall, marks the Wall family plot. Other members of the Wall family who resided in Sharon Township are in other plots in the cemetery. Harriet is buried next to her husband Peter in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Wadsworth.

"History of Medina County And Ohio", by Perrin, Battle, and Goodspeed, Sharon Township, "CHRISTIAN WALL, farmer ... is a native of the township in which he now resides, and was born Feb. 24, 1834. He is one in a family of ten children born to Charles and Sophia (Frederick) Wall, and their names respectively are Jonas, John, Christian, Saloma, Thomas, Reason, Charles, dead; William, dead; Margaret, dead, and Franklin. These children, with the exception of the eldest, were all born in Sharon Township. Mr. and Mrs Wall [Charles and Sophia] were among the township's earliest settlers. The settled in the southeastern part in 1831, and in 1835, located on the farm they now occupy. Mr. [Charles] Wall figured quite prominently in the early history of Sharon, and it was he that located and cut the road through the woods from the Montville Line to Sharon Center. [This is now Rt. 162 west of Sharon Center]. An item of interest in Mr. Wall's history is, that he owned the first wagon in his neighborhood, and for this he gave seven good three-year-old steers and $35 cash. At that early day this wagon was considered a great luxury, and only used on Sundays, etc. Mr. and Mrs. Wall are members of the Lutheran Church. Christian Wall remained with his parents on the farm until he was 26 years of age. Sept. 30, 1855, he was united in marriage with Anna M., daughter of Jacob and Mary (Koonkle) Giger, and to this union was born one child--Jennie L., born March 26, 1865. From the time of Mr. Wall's marriage, until 1867, he lived in different localities, and at that date he settled in Sharon Township on a farm one mile east of the Center, where he has ever since resided. Mr. Wall owns 107 acres of good land, and his vocation in life is that of farming and stock-raising. He and his family are members of the Lutheran Church, and for the past nine years he has held the position of Deacon in the same. ...".⁸⁰

Rebecca Wall was born to Christian Wall and Anna Catherine Bachman/Baughman in East Penn Township, Northampton Co. (now Carbon Co.), Pennsylvania and was about twelve to fourteen years old when the family came to Chippewa Township in Wayne County, Ohio. She married Curtis Brouse in the old Waltz or "High" church located on the Wayne and Medina County line just south of Wadsworth and north of Chippewa Township and Doylestown.  Curtis was born in Pennsylvania to Michael O. Brouse and Susanah Wilt who were very early settlers in Wayne Co., Ohio. Curtis and Rebecca moved from Wayne County to Sharon Township before 1840, then Lorain County in 1849, then to Noble County, Indiana in 1854 where she died in 1864 while her son Curtis was serving in the Union Army during the Civil War. She is buried in the Allen Chapel Cemetery in Kendallville, Indiana. The will of her father, who died in 1853, names her as heir Margaret Brouse, although all other records give her given name as Rebecca.

Catherine was the third daughter and fifth child of Christian and Anna Catherine Wall. She was baptized in the Ben Salem Church in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Information on the Find A Grave website for her headstone in the Loyal Oak Cemetery gives us her dates of birth and death. Although the dates on the marker are no longer readable, I assume they are correct. Catherine married Jonathan Everhard, the widower of her sister Mary Magdalena who died about 1826-27. They were married in Baughman Township in Wayne County by the minister of the Waltz Church in June 1829 and the record of the marriage can be found in the genealogy section of the Wayne County Library in Wooster, Ohio. He was the son of Jacob Everhard who came to Ohio from Pennsylvania in 1818. Jonathan and Catherine Everhard were among the early settlers in Sharon Township settling on their farm in 1831, which was located in section 68 southeast of Sharon Center. Catherine died in 1876 and Jonathan three years later. Both are buried in the Loyal Oak Cemetery in Norton, Ohio. Isaac Wall was the sixth child of Christian wall and Anna Catherine Bachman/Baughman, born in April 1813 and baptised in the Lutheran and Reformed Church in Weisenberg Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. He was about eleven years old when his family came to Wayne County. He married Susannah Brouse about 1837-38. She was the sister of Curtis Brouse who married Rebecca Wall. I have found no record of the marriage, but I assume it occurred in Medina County. Isaac purchased a farm in the southern half of sections 21 and 22 near Joshua Hartman, his father Christian and brother Charles, north of their lands in sections 39 and 42, west of Sharon Center on the Montville Township line. As far as we know Isaac and Susannah had four children. Isaac died in Wadsworth in 1870 at the age of 57. He and Susannah are buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Wadsworth.

Judith was the seventh child and forth daughter of Christian Wall and Anna Catherine Baughman. She was probably born in Lehigh Co., Pennsylvania and was baptised in the Lutheran and Reformed Church in Weisenberg Township. She would have been nine or ten when the family moved to Wayne County. She married Joshua Hartman in February 1834 by the Rev. Weygandt in Wayne County, probably in Chippewa Township. Joshua was the son of Peter Hartman whose family knew the Wall family in Pennsylvania. In 1807 Peter Hartman and his wife Catherine baptised a daughter in the Ben Salem Union Church in Northampton (now Carbon) County and Christian and Catherine Wahl sponsored the baptism. Judith died, perhaps during child birth in May 1835. There is no record of her place of burial, but I suspect she was buried in Sharon Center. Julie and Joshua had one child, Eli Hartman, who married his cousin and daughter of Isaac Wall, Sarah Ann in 1855. As far as we know Judith had no surviving descendants after the death of her son Eli. Joshua was twice more married after Judith's death and had a large family, all born in Sharon Township.

Abigail was the eighth of eleven children of Christian and Anna Catherine Wahl. We have no record of her birth or baptism and she died before the 1850 census (the first to list place of birth), but given her approximate date of birth it was certainly Pennsylvania. Abigail married Joel Baughman, son of Paul and Barbara Baughman, descendants of the Bachman family of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Abigail died in Wadsworth at twenty-three years of age, likely from complications of the birth of her only child and daughter Barbara Baughman. She is buried in the Doylestown Presbyterian Cemetery in Wayne County. Her husband Joel is also buried there. He died in October 1855.

Peter Wall was the nineth child of Christian and Catherine Wall. We know from his headstone that he was born in 1819 in Pennsylvania. Given the date he probably born in Union County (today's Snyder County), Pennsylvania. He was about five years of age when the family came to Ohio. Peter married Sybella Everhard, granddaughter of Jacob Everhard Sr., daughter of Jacob Everhard and his second wife Mary Harter of Chippewa, Wayne Co. who were among the early settlers that came from Pennsylvania to Wayne Co. Peter and his family lived for many years on their fifty acre farm in Spenser Township in western Medina County south of today's New London Eastern Road and east of Firestone Rd. Peter purchased the land from Simon and Grace Perkins of Akron in January 1854; however, the family is listed in Spenser on the 1850 census. Sometime before 1880 Peter sold his land in Spenser and moved to a farm in York Township near Mallet Creek. He and his son Jacob purchased land located north of County Rd. 74 (Stone Road), approximately halfway between Beck Road and Erhart Road. Sybella died in November 1882 in Mallet Creek and Peter followed her in October 1900. The couple are buried in the York Cemetery in Mallet Creek. Their son James Jacob Wall was a well regarded Medina County doctor and practiced medicine in York Township for many years until his death in 1916 in Mallet Creek. Peter and Sybella's grandson William was a pharmacist in Medina.

Sarah Wall was the youngest daughter of Christian and Catherine Wall, born in December 1820, probably in Union County (now Snyder), Pennsylvania. Her memorial on Find A Grave says she was born in Lancaster County, but I believe this is incorrect. She was about four years of age when the family moved to Wayne County, Ohio. She married Abraham Keller in Chippewa Township in November 1838, eight years her senior. Abraham was born in Hagerstown, Maryland, but we have been unable to identify his parents. Abraham and Sarah purchased a farm and settled in Sharon Township, Medina County shortly after 1840, where they remained for the remainder of their lives. Abraham worked as a carpenter in Sharon, as well as farming. Their land was located southeast of Sharon Center south of Fixler Road and east of State Road in Section 68. Abraham became disabled with dementia (Alzheimers Disease?) about 1877 when he was 64 and in 1879-80 was confined to the Newburg Asylum. He died in January 1884 at the age of seventy-one. Sarah died in Sharon in February 1900 at the age of eighty. Sarah and Abraham are buried in the Sharon Center Cemetery.

Abraham was about 28 and Sarah was about 19-20 in 1840. This is the only Keller household in Chippewa or Baughman Twp. in 1840 and the age categories are a good match; Godfrey Keller also appears on the 1830 Census in Baughman Twp., Wayne Co.].

OWEN REIMER Mary Ellen Reimer, daughter of Abram and Sarah Keller was born in Sharon township, Medina County, Nov. 29, 1848, and died at Wadsworth, April 26, 1923, aged 74 years 4 month and 28 days. She was a member of a family of nine children of which one son and one daughter survive her. She was married to Owen Reimer, Dec. 31, 1874. No children were born to them but she made a home and became a true mother for Mrs. Dora (McDowell) Seiberling, who was left motherless at the age of 16 years. Mrs. Reimer was received into the Lutheran church by infant baptism, administered by Rev. Mr. Swisler on Mar. 15, 1852, and confirmed in St. Paul's Lutheran church of Sharon Center by Rev. John Hamilton. She transferred her membership to Grace Lutheran church of Wadsworth, April 10, 1898. She leaves to mourn her departure a husband, one brother, Chas. Keller, one sister, Mrs. Barbara Florry, twelve nieces and six nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon ath the house, conducted by her pastor, Dr. C. B. Etter. Burial was made in Woodlawn." ³⁰⁵

Daniel was the youngest child of Christian and Catherine Wall and the last born in Pennsylvania. The 1820 census of Pennsylvania places the Christian Wall family in Penn Township of Union County (now Snyder County) and lists Christian as a merchant. It is likely the family lived in or near Selinsgrove on the west bank of the Susquahanal. Christian purchased his lot in Chippewa Towhship, Ohio in 1824 from the Wooster Land Office. Since all records give Daniel's place of birth as Pennsylvania he was just an infant when the family came to Ohio. Daniel first married Lydia Fry, probably the daughter of Michael Fry of Wadsworth. They had three children, Catherine, Isaac and Abigail. Lydia died in Wadsworth in November 1853 and is buried in the Acme Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery west of Wadsworth where her father is buried. Daniel married again to Sarah Noleff (sometimes her surname is given as Neff or Nolf). They were married in 1854 in Wadsworth and had four children. Daniel died in 1906 in Wadsworth. I have been unable to locate his grave.

REASON WALL

Reason Wall was born on the family farm in Sharon Township in May 1840, the sixth child of Charles Wall and Sophia Frederick. He was one of eight sons and two daughters. Three of his siblings, two brothers and one sister, died as very young children between 1842 and 1849. Reason married Abigail, the daughter of Jacob Kuder and Mary Kime, who came to Sharon from Pennsylvania in 1834. Reason and Abbie were married in Wadsworth in 1861. After their marriage they apparently moved around Medina County, living in Sharon, Montville and Granger townships between 1866 and 1873. By 1874 they had purchased the farm I knew growing up in Sharon, located on top of the hill a couple of miles directly east of Sharon Center on what is now Hatch road. The farm consisted of the original 84 acres north of Hatch road and another 30 acres or so along Burdett road south of Hatch road. In 1890 the farm was struck by the tornado that tore through northern Sharon Township from the Montville Township line east into Summit County before dissipating near Akron. The tornado destroyed Christian Wall's barn (Reason's brother), killing his livestock then turning slightly north and hitting Reason and Abbie's farm, destroying the barn and severly damaging the house. Reason, Abby and their children, Mary and Reason DeForest, were at home but uninjured; however, two of their neighbors, a man, his wife and their dog, who were the only fatalities when their home was destroyed. Abbie died in April 1910 after a week of intense suffering caused by a chronic intestinal infection. She was 66 years-old. Her obituary describes her as a woman of faith, quiet, empathetic, and loved by family, friends and neighbors. She was buried in the Copley Cemetery located on the Sharon-Copley road in Summit County. In December after Abbie's death Reason made his will giving the 94 acre farm to his son Reason Deforest on the condition he pay his other sons $4000 for the deed. His daughter Mary Wall Stauffer was given his other farm, "on which I now live" on the condition she pay the other heirs $3000. I have not been able to determine the location of this other farm. The 1897 Sharon Township land ownership map shows Reason Wall owning about 84 acres in sections 32 and 33 north of Hatch road and 47 acres south of that farm along Burdett road in the west quarter of Section 49. Reason died only a few months after Abbie in March 1911. He is buried in the Copley Cemetery next to Abbie.

REASON DEFOREST WALL

Reason Deforest Wall was my grandfather and guardian after my parents separated and my father was killed in a vehicle accident in 1946. He purchased his father's farm from his siblings after my great-grandfather Reason Wall died in 1911. The farm was located a couple of miles directly east of Sharon Center on top of the hill where Burdett road meets Hatch road, consisting of 84 acres located Sections 32 & 33. After my mother separated from my dad in 1945, while he was still stationed in Italy, she left my brother and me with my Wall grandparents and went to Florida to look for work. She subsquently was involved in a questionable activity and spent a few years as a guest of the State of Florida. After our dad was discharged from the Army in November 1945 we lived with my grandparents on their farm until he was killed in the auto accident in March 1946. We continued to live on the farm until 1948 when my grandfather sent us to live with my aunt and uncle Clara (Wall) and Platt Coolman as our foster parent. In 1949 my uncle Platt died of a sudden and massive heart attack at the age of 49. Aunt Clara returned with us to the family farm and we lived there until 1952 when Aunt Clara remarried to Del Bridgman of Sharon Center. As we grew up in Sharon Center I often went up to the farm to visit and sometimes to work. My Grandfather was a great believer in work. Growing up in Sharon I developed a close relationship with him and he would sometime express his view of life. From those talks I think he was agnostic in his opinion of Religion.
Reason Deforest Wall married my grandmother Winifred Pearl Tyler in Wadsworth in 1895 and then taught school in Liverpool, Granger and Sharon into the early 1900's. Ironically, he was qualified as a teacher based on a highschool education (not unusual then) while my grandmother was actually educated for four years as a teacher in a "normal" school in Wadsworth, but spent her adult life raising 11 children; however, I never heard her complain about it. Grandpa Wall was active in Democratic politics in Sharon, serving on an agriculture advisory board in the 1930's under FDR as a crop reporter. One of my earliest memories is watching the election of Dwight Eisenhower (he favored Adli Stevenson) on his TV, the only one in the family at the time. He also served as a census taker in Sharon in 1920. In the early 1950's Grandma Wall was paralyzed from the waist down because of a spinal problem that steadily grew worse until her death in June 1958. Grandpa remained on the farm for a few years before selling it and moving to a small house in Wadsworth. Soon after our marriage in 1963 Sue and I visited him in Wadsworth. We saw him alive the last time in February 1965 after the birth of our son Bruce. In April that year we returned for his funeral.
I remember my Grandfather as a bald, tall, thin man, a trait that characterized many of us in the family. In my experience he was often stern, but also playful at times. He was known by some as a "skirt chaser", something I can neither confirm or deny. He showed me great tenderness and empathy when things began to go wrong for me in the Bridgman home. All said and done, he had my loving respect; however, I think he was very much a 19th century man, not suprising for a man whose attitudes were formed in that era.
